Fort Wayne, Indiana, may not be the first city that comes to mind when you think of hockey hotbeds, but the city has a rich hockey history, with a number of players and teams making a significant impact on the NHL and the greater hockey world. From the early days of the Fort Wayne Komets to the present day, Fort Wayne has been a hotbed for hockey talent.

Early Days of Hockey in Fort Wayne

The Fort Wayne Komets were founded in 1952 as a member of the International Hockey League (IHL). The Komets quickly became one of the most successful teams in the IHL, winning the Turner Cup championship in 1953 and 1954. The Komets continued to be a powerhouse in the IHL, winning the Turner Cup again in 1963, 1973, and 1976.

The Komets' success in the IHL helped to put Fort Wayne on the hockey map. The city became a destination for hockey players from all over the world, and a number of Komets players went on to have successful careers in the NHL.

Komets Park and Parkview Field

The Komets played their home games at Komets Park from 1952 to 1990. Komets Park was a small, intimate arena that was known for its raucous atmosphere. The Komets had a great deal of success at Komets Park, winning three Turner Cup championships. The arena was demolished in 1991, but it remains a fond memory for many Komets fans.

The Komets moved to Parkview Field in 1990. Parkview Field is a larger, more modern arena than Komets Park, but it still has a great atmosphere. The Komets have continued to be successful at Parkview Field, winning the Turner Cup championship in 2003 and 2010.

Allen County War Memorial Coliseum

The Allen County War Memorial Coliseum is another important hockey venue in Fort Wayne. The Coliseum was built in 1952 and has been home to a number of hockey teams, including the Fort Wayne Komets, the Fort Wayne Freeze, and the Indiana Ice.

The Coliseum has hosted a number of major hockey events, including the 1988 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships and the 2004 IIHF World U18 Championships.
