Macdonald was a struggling writer and single mother when she was hired to work as a nanny for a family in Seattle. The family's home was quarantined after one of the children contracted the bubonic plague. Macdonald, who had never encountered the disease before, was terrified. But instead of giving in to fear, she found herself drawn to the absurdity of the situation.

Macdonald began to write about her experiences in a series of letters to her sister. These letters were eventually published as the book "The Plague and I," which became a bestseller and made Macdonald a household name.

The Plague and I" is a hilarious and heartwarming account of Macdonald's time spent in quarantine. Macdonald's writing is full of wit and charm, and she has a knack for finding the humor in even the most difficult situations. She writes about the challenges of caring for a sick child, the boredom of being confined to the house, and the absurdity of the quarantine rules. But through it all, Macdonald never loses her sense of humor.

The Plague and I" is more than just a funny book. It is a testament to the power of laughter in the face of adversity. Macdonald's story shows us that even in the darkest of times, there is always room for joy.
