As Petrović blossomed into a teenager, his exceptional abilities caught the attention of Cibona Zagreb, one of the top basketball clubs in Europe. He joined their youth program in 1979 and quickly established himself as a rising star. Under the guidance of legendary coach Mirko Novosel, Petrović developed his signature style of play: a lethal combination of pinpoint shooting, dazzling ball-handling skills, and an unwavering determination that earned him comparisons to the great Mozart.

Conquering Europe and Embracing the NBA

With Cibona, Petrović achieved unprecedented success. He led the team to five Yugoslav League championships, three Yugoslav Cups, and the pinnacle of European club basketball: the FIBA European Champions Cup (now known as the EuroLeague) in 1985 and 1986. His performances in Europe were nothing short of sensational, as he consistently outplayed some of the greatest players on the continent, earning him the nickname "The Mozart of Basketball."

In 1989, Petrović's dream of playing in the NBA became a reality when he was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers. He quickly became a fan favorite, showcasing his unique talents alongside fellow stars Clyde Drexler and Terry Porter. In his first NBA season, Petrović averaged 18.9 points per game and was named to the All-Rookie First Team.

A Tragic Flight and an Enduring Legacy

On June 7, 1993, tragedy struck. Petrović was a passenger on a flight from Germany to Croatia when the plane crashed, killing all 30 people on board. He was just 28 years old.
