From Chapter 1: Early Life and Training

I was born in Tel Aviv in 1924, the son of Russian immigrants. My father was a doctor and my mother was a nurse. I had two older sisters. We lived in a small apartment in the center of the city.
I was always fascinated by airplanes. I would spend hours watching them fly overhead. When I was 12 years old, I joined the Air Scouts. I learned the basics of flying and how to build model airplanes.
In 1942, I was 18 years old and the Second World War was raging. I decided to join the Royal Air Force. I was sent to England for training. I graduated from flight school in 1943 and was assigned to a squadron of Spitfire fighters.
