Early Life and Education

Laura Lane Welch was born on November 4, 1946, in Midland, Texas. Her father was a successful oilman, and her mother was a homemaker. Laura grew up in a close-knit family, and she attended public schools in Midland. She was a good student, and she participated in a variety of extracurricular activities, including cheerleading and debate.

After graduating from high school, Laura attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. She majored in education, and she earned a bachelor's degree in 1968. After college, Laura taught elementary school in Dallas.

Marriage and Family

In 1977, Laura met George W. Bush at a barbecue. They were married two years later, in 1979. The couple has two daughters, Barbara and Jenna. Laura is a devoted wife and mother, and she has often said that her family is her top priority.

First Lady of the United States

In 2000, George W. Bush was elected President of the United States. Laura became the First Lady, and she moved into the White House with her husband and daughters. As First Lady, Laura focused on issues such as education, healthcare, and literacy. She also worked to raise awareness of breast cancer and other women's health issues.

Laura Bush was a popular First Lady. She was known for her intelligence, her compassion, and her sense of humor. She was also a strong supporter of her husband's policies. Laura Bush left the White House in 2009, when her husband's term ended. She and her husband returned to Texas, where they live in Dallas.

Post-White House Life
