Early Life

Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in Maryland in 1822. Her parents were slaves, and she was one of eleven children. She had a difficult childhood. She was often beaten and mistreated by her owners. She also had to work hard from a young age.

Escape to Freedom

In 1849, Harriet Tubman escaped to freedom. She traveled by foot and by boat, and she had to hide from slave catchers along the way. She finally reached Philadelphia, where she was safe from slavery.

The Underground Railroad

After Harriet Tubman escaped to freedom, she became a conductor on the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses that helped slaves escape to freedom. Harriet Tubman helped hundreds of slaves escape to freedom, and she never lost a single passenger.

The Civil War

During the Civil War, Harriet Tubman served as a scout and a spy for the Union Army. She also helped to recruit black soldiers for the war. She was a courageous and dedicated soldier, and she made a significant contribution to the Union victory.

Later Life

After the Civil War, Harriet Tubman settled in Auburn, New York. She continued to work for social justice, and she helped to establish a home for elderly and disabled African Americans. She died in 1913 at the age of 93.
