The best way to survive a hurricane is to be prepared. Here are some things you can do to prepare for a hurricane:

  • Make an evacuation plan. Decide where you will go and how you will get there if you need to evacuate your home.
  • Assemble an emergency kit. Your emergency kit should include food, water, first-aid supplies, a flashlight, a battery-powered radio, and other essential items.
  • Secure your home. Cover your windows with plywood or hurricane shutters. Bring in any outdoor furniture or other items that could be blown away by the wind.
  • Fill up your gas tank. In the event of a power outage, you may need to use your car to evacuate or to get to a shelter.
  • Have cash on hand. ATMs and credit card machines may not be working during a power outage.

If you are unable to evacuate your home before a hurricane hits, there are some things you can do to stay safe:

  • Stay indoors. The safest place to be during a hurricane is inside a sturdy building.
  • Go to a windowless room. If possible, go to a room on the lowest floor of your house that does not have any windows.
  • Stay away from windows. Windows can be shattered by the wind and flying debris.
  • Listen to the radio or television for updates. Stay informed about the storm's path and severity.
  • Do not go outside. Even if the storm seems to have passed, it is important to stay indoors until the authorities say it is safe to go outside.

After a hurricane has passed, it is important to take steps to recover and rebuild. Here are some things you can do to recover from a hurricane:

  • Be aware of hazards. There may be downed power lines, broken glass, and other hazards in the area.
  • Listen to the authorities. Follow the instructions of local authorities regarding evacuation, shelter, and other safety measures.
