Daughter of Destiny: An Autobiography is the gripping memoir of Benazir Bhutto, the first woman to lead a Muslim-majority country. Bhutto's life was marked by both triumph and tragedy, and her autobiography provides a fascinating glimpse into both.
Bhutto was born into a wealthy and influential family in Pakistan. Her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, was the first Prime Minister of Pakistan. Bhutto's mother, Nusrat Bhutto, was a prominent social activist and politician. Bhutto was educated at some of the world's most prestigious schools, including Harvard University and Oxford University.
In 1977, Bhutto's father was overthrown in a military coup. Bhutto and her family were placed under house arrest. In 1979, Bhutto's father was executed. Bhutto was devastated by the loss of her father, but she vowed to continue his legacy. She entered politics in 1982 and quickly rose to prominence. In 1988, she was elected Prime Minister of Pakistan, becoming the first woman to lead a Muslim-majority country.
Bhutto's time as Prime Minister was marked by both progress and setbacks. She made significant strides in improving education and health care for Pakistanis. She also worked to promote democracy and human rights. However, Bhutto's government was also plagued by corruption and economic instability. In 1990, she was dismissed from office by the military.
Bhutto spent the next several years in exile. She returned to Pakistan in 1993 and resumed her political career. In 1996, she was re-elected Prime Minister. Her second term was even more tumultuous than her first. She was faced with a growing insurgency in the northwest of the country. She was also the target of several assassination attempts. In 1999, she was overthrown in a military coup.
Bhutto spent the next several years in exile. She returned to Pakistan in 2007 and announced her intention to run for President. However, she was assassinated in a suicide bombing on December 27, 2007.
Daughter of Destiny: An Autobiography is a powerful and moving account of Benazir Bhutto's life. It is a story of triumph and tragedy, of love and loss. It is a must-read for anyone interested in Pakistan, Islam, or women in politics.
