Her second term was even more tumultuous than her first. She was faced with a growing insurgency in the northwest of the country. She was also the target of several assassination attempts. In 1999, she was overthrown in a military coup.

Bhutto spent the next several years in exile. She returned to Pakistan in 2007 and announced her intention to run for President. However, she was assassinated in a suicide bombing on December 27, 2007.
