The book is annotated with extensive notes and references, making it an invaluable resource for students, scholars, and anyone interested in the history of Constantine and the Roman Empire.

Early Life and Career

Constantine was born in Naissus, Moesia (modern-day Niš, Serbia) on February 27, 272 AD. His father, Constantius I, was a Roman general who later became emperor. Constantine's mother, Helena, was a Christian.

Constantine began his military career under his father. He distinguished himself in battle and quickly rose through the ranks. In 306 AD, Constantine was proclaimed emperor by his troops after the death of his father.

Reign as Emperor

Constantine's reign was a time of great change and upheaval for the Roman Empire. The empire was divided into two halves, with Constantine ruling the western half from Rome and his co-emperor Licinius ruling the eastern half from Nicomedia.

Constantine faced a number of challenges during his reign, including threats from barbarian invasions and civil wars. He also had to deal with the growing influence of Christianity within the empire.

In 312 AD, Constantine experienced a vision of the Christian God while marching to Rome to confront his rival, Maxentius. Constantine's victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge is often seen as a turning point in the history of Christianity.

After his victory, Constantine issued the Edict of Milan, which granted toleration to Christians throughout the Roman Empire. This edict marked a major shift in Roman policy towards Christianity and helped to pave the way for the eventual triumph of the faith.

Constantine also played a key role in the development of Christian doctrine. He convened the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, which established the Nicene Creed, a statement of Christian belief that is still widely accepted today.

Constantine died in 337 AD at the age of 64. He was succeeded by his three sons: Constantine II, Constantius II, and Constans.

Legacy

Constantine the Great is considered one of the most important figures in the history of Christianity. His conversion to Christianity and his policies helped to establish the faith as the dominant religion in the Roman Empire. Constantine's reign also marked a turning point in the history of the Roman Empire itself, as he reunited the empire under his rule and introduced a number of reforms that helped to strengthen the empire.

Constantine's legacy is still felt today. The Nicene Creed, which he helped to establish, is still widely accepted by Christians today. And the city of Constantinople, which he founded, is still a major center of Christianity.
