On June 6, 1944, the Allied forces launched the largest amphibious invasion in history, code-named Operation Overlord. The landings on the beaches of Normandy were a pivotal moment in World War II, and the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany.

In the midst of the chaos and carnage of D-Day, one woman stood out for her bravery and compassion. Frances Slanger was a 22-year-old nurse from New York City who had volunteered to serve in the US Army.

Slanger was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, and on D-Day she parachuted into Normandy with the rest of her unit. She landed in a field near Sainte-Mère-Église, and immediately began treating the wounded.

Slanger worked tirelessly for hours, treating hundreds of soldiers. She bandaged wounds, gave injections, and comforted the dying. She risked her own life to save others, and her bravery earned her the respect of her fellow soldiers.

In the days and weeks that followed, Slanger continued to work tirelessly, caring for the wounded and helping to evacuate civilians from the war zone. She was awarded the Bronze Star for her actions, and she was hailed as a heroine by the US military.

After the war, Slanger returned to the United States and resumed her nursing career. She never forgot her experiences in Normandy, and she often spoke about the bravery of the soldiers she had treated.

Slanger's story is a reminder of the courage and compassion of the men and women who fought in World War II. She is a true heroine, and her story deserves to be told.

Forgotten Heroine

Frances Slanger's story is largely unknown today. She was never given the same level of recognition as other D-Day heroes, such as Audie Murphy or John Basilone.

There are a number of reasons for this. Slanger was a woman, and women's contributions to the war effort were often overlooked. She was also a nurse, and nurses are often seen as being less important than combat soldiers.

But Slanger's story is just as important as any other D-Day hero. She saved countless lives, and she risked her own life to do so. She is a true heroine, and her story deserves to be told.

Legacy

Frances Slanger's legacy is still alive today. She is remembered by her family and friends, and by the many people whose lives she saved.

In 2014, a memorial to Slanger was dedicated in Sainte-Mère-Église. The memorial is a reminder of her bravery and compassion, and it serves as a symbol of the sacrifices made by all the men and women who fought in World War II.

Frances Slanger was a true heroine, and her story is an inspiration to us all. She showed us that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope. She showed us that one person can make a difference.
